Caloocan prosecutor survives ambush try

An assistant chief inquest prosecutor from Caloocan City survived an ambush attempt against him near Caloocan City Hall at East Grace Park in Caloocan City on September 10.

Colonel Noel Flores, Caloocan City police chief, identified the victim as Chief Assistant Inquest Prosecutor Elmer Susano.

Susano was on his way home in his Toyota Hilux pick-up truck when he stopped by a restaurant that he frequents along B. Serrano Street corner 9th Avenue in Caloocan at around 3 p.m. to buy food, the restaurant staff said.

Investigation showed that when the victim went inside his car, four armed men surrounded the vehicle and peppered it with bullets. Since Susano’s car is bulletproof, he managed to flee unscathed.

Flores said the gunmen got on two motorcycles and chased Susano for a few meters before scattering.

Investigators said the gunmen used short firearms of undetermined caliber for the ambush try. Thirteen cartridges were retrieved from the crime scene.

Susano told the police that he has received death threats before.

Susano is the second city prosecutor to be ambushed in Caloocan in recent years.

On May 2017, Assistant City Prosecutor Diosdado Azarcon was killed when he was shot thrice on the head by two motorcycle-riding gunmen at his house at Barangay 63, West Grace Park in Caloocan.

Flores said they are now obtaining available closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident to trace the gunmen’s whereabouts.

Further investigation is underway.
