Tala Hospital reports 30 critical Covid patients

About 30 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients admitted at the Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital or Tala Hospital in Caloocan City are in critical condition, the hospital’s medical chief said on Thursday, according to a report by Manila Bulletin.

Dr. Alfonso Famaran said these patients are being intubated as their COVID-19 infection was made worse by “severe pneumonia and other severe comorbidities.”

“Alam natin na pag intubated, hindi maganda yung prognosis nyan. Sa experience namin, kung 30, nasa mga 3/30 ang nagsusurvive po (We know that when a patient is intubated, their prognosis is not good. Based on our experience, only 3 of 30 patients survive),” Famaran said in a DZBB interview.

Famaran said relatives of critical patients are still not allowed to personally visit their loved ones. He allows the attending physicians to send photos or videos of the patients to their relatives.

“May kinukuha kaming cellphone number. Doon po nag-uupdate ‘yung mga attending physicians namin kung ano ho yung situation ng pasyente (We get their relatives’ cellphone number. Through it, our attending physicians can update them about their patients’ situation),” he said.

As some hospitals devoted to COVID-19 in Metro Manila have already reached full capacity amid the surge in cases, Famaran said Tala Hospital can still accommodate about 250 patients.

“We are not yet full. Our admitted cases are only 249 out of 500 beds,” he added.
