Caloocan mayor supports products made by PDLs
Caloocan City Mayor Dale Gonzalo “Along” Malapitan on Saturday, Nov. 5, encouraged the public to support the products made by the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in the Caloocan City Jail, according to a report by Manila Bulletin.
“Kung nag-iisip pa po kayo ng pang regalo sa Pasko, subukan niyo po ang mga produktong gawa ng mga Persons Deprived of Liberty o PDLs (If you are still thinking about what gifts to give this Christmas, try the products made by the Persons Deprived of Liberty or PDLs),” the mayor said.
“Bukod sa mga programang pang-rehabilitasyon, sinisikap din ng mga persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) na magkaroon ng kaunting pangkabuhayan gamit ang kanilang talento sa arts and crafts (Apart from rehabilitation programs, the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) are also trying to earn a living using their talent in arts and crafts),” he added.
The products of the PDLs including bags, wallets, bayong (native bags), alkansya (coin banks), and picture frames were displayed in front of the Caloocan City Jail, the city government said.
It said that some of the products were made using rolled magazines and paper mache.
On Oct. 28, Caloocan City Jail personnel showcased the products of the PDLs at the Caloocan City Hall as part of the National Correctional Consciousness Week 2022 celebration.
The engagement aims to raise awareness in the community that the city jail has developmental activities for the PDLs to become productive.
“This income generated livelihood helps them provide the primary needs of their families while inside jail custody,” the Caloocan City Jail said.
“Suportahan po natin ang kanilang galing at pagnanais na makabalik sa ating lipunan bilang mabuting mamamayan (Let us support their talents and desire to return to our society as good citizens),” Malapitan said.
